Book Review: The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin

Book Name : The Thing About Jellyfish.
Author Name: Ali Benjamin.
Genre: Children's &  Young Adult.
No of. Pages:  352.
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
  • ISBN-13: 978-1447291251
  • ISBN-10: 1447291255

About the Book:

It's peculiar how no-words can be better than words. How silence can say more than noise, or a person's absence can occupy even more space than their presence did.
Suzy is twelve when her best friend, Franny, drowns one summer at the beach. It takes two days for the news to reach Suzy, and it's not something that she can accept: Franny has always been a strong swimmer, from the day they met in swim class when they were just five. How can someone all of a sudden, just no longer be there?
Suzy realizes that they must have got it wrong: Franny didn't just drown - she was stung by a poisonous jellyfish. This makes a lot more sense to Suzy's logical mind than a random drowning - cause: a jellyfish sting; effect: death.
Suzy's journey to acceptance is quiet - she resolves to either say something important, or say nothing at all. But it's also bursting with bittersweet humour, heart-breaking honesty, big ideas and small details.
The Thing About Jellyfish is an astonishing debut novel from Ali Benjamin, and is perfect for fans of Wonder, Counting By 7s and My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece.

Book Review:

The book is about the struggle of a twelve year Suzy, who is determined to prove that her best friend Franny wasn’t drowned but must have been stung by a deadly jellyfish. As Franny was an excellent swimmer. By the start of her seventh grade starts her quest to prove that the jellyfish are the reason for the loss of Franny from their lives. But Suzy has turned into the person she never was, she has become insanely quiet from the person that she was. This has every person around her worried as they are unable to make Suzy speak her mind like she always used to. The book describes all the research that Suzy does when she stumbles upon an article on a fish tank about how numbers of people are killed every year when stung by a jellyfish during a Science visit to an aquarium. That’s when Suzy decides that she will tell everyone what killed Franny through her Science paper presentation for seventh grade.
The book has so much to offer apart from the beautiful story that Ali Benjamin woven, the story about how middle school changes everything for someone like Suzy who loses her best friend Franny way before she drowned while on a vacation. This book is about discovering the meaning of care and love when you have no hope left in yourself. It’s about how your family is always there to support you no matter what stupid decision you take to prove something you are determined about. This book is about the beautiful journey of Suzy in the middle school when she has no hopes and no friends and the transformation that happens further. Ali Benjamin has done a fabulous job in writing this book, so well researched about such a different topic like jellyfish. This book kept me engrossed till the end in every part of it.

Frankly, I was never even bothered to read about jellyfishes and their various species, Thanks to the author now that even I am engrossed to know more and more about jellyfishes just like Suzy.

Certainly one of the very finest children’s book about a knowledgeable topic that should be read for the knowledge and the story that it has to offer.

About the Book

Somewhere along the cobbled streets of Paris, an apartment lies thick with dust and secrets: full of priceless artworks hidden away for decades.

High-flying fine art agent Flora from London, more comfortable with the tension of a million-pound auction than a cosy candlelit dinner for two, is called in to assess these suddenly discovered treasures. As an expert in her field, she must trace the history of each painting and discover who has concealed them for so long.

Thrown in amongst the glamorous Vermeil family as they move between Paris and Antibes, Flora begins to discover that things aren't all that they seem, while back at home her own family is recoiling from a seismic shock. The terse and brooding Xavier Vermeil seems intent on forcing Flora out of his family's affairs - but just what is he hiding?

Review

The book opens up in Paris where two men try to break-in an old abandoned building and discover something which leaves them awestruck. The scene further shifts to fine art agent Flora Sykes, where she lives wither family that includes her father an ace Auctioneer, her mother and her elder brother. Flora is then called to investigate the abandoned Paris apartment which apparently is full of artworks from the Nazi period. The Renoirs, the Faucheux and many more artworks that the world lost track about. She then meets the owners of this abandoned property, a very big name in the social circle all over Paris “The Vermeil’s”. As she discovers some secrets associated with the paintings from the time of World War II, during her course of discovering and uncovering the secrets with each passing day she somehow crosses her paths with Xavier and Natasha Vermeil. With very less time to reconnect with the paintings history and pressure from her boss Angus, to take the painting in the highly awaited Art Auction.

Flora in the middle of her own family problems hiding the secret of her brother’s trail and being delved into finding out the history of the Vermeil’s and their association with the painting’s shuffling between 4 cities and getting to know roots of the work that she loves doing. Being attracted to the people she should not be and getting herself involved into the ‘Paris Secret’ and being  trying to heal from the betrayal from her friend. Not knowing if she is making her future or destroying it.
This book is a must read for every person who loves Mystery with hints of romance in it. The book has everything one can ask for, social life of young high class kid’s and the bond that they share with their family, the romance and mystery happening in the most beautiful city in the world ‘PARIS’.

Karen Swan has done a stellar job in writing this book that has so much about art and her research is fantastic. This book actually made me know art even more. The book has giving me a chance to know art history and I guess I am in love with artwork from the times of WWII now. I wouldn’t have made any effort to have knowledge of the artwork if I hadn’t read this book. I am glad that I got a chance to review this book and fall in love art just the way Flora does.

Cover Reveal: A Column of Fire by Ken Follett

About the book:

Opening in Christmas 1558, A Column of Fire will take readers back to Kingsbridge once more.

Jeremy Trevathan, Publisher of Macmillan Adult Books said: ‘Publication of a new Ken Follett novel is always a major event, but a new Ken Follett Kingsbridge novel, set in the fictional town that readers first encountered in The Pillars of the Earth, is hugely exciting. We’re all delighted at Pan Macmillan to be helping to bring this wonderful novel to readers in 2017.’

Ken Follett announced the title while on a research trip to Seville, Spain:

‘It is a spy story set in the sixteenth century, during the reign of Elizabeth I of England. There were many assassination plots against the Queen, so the people around her set up an espionage system to foil those sixteenth century terrorists. This was the beginning of the British secret service that eventually gave us James Bond.’

As in Ken Follett’s other bestselling novels, readers follow a cast of characters across their lives, allowing insight through their eyes into the most fascinating and tumultuous historical events of the period: in A Column of Fire, we follow the story of young Ned Willard. When Elizabeth Tudor becomes queen, all of Europe turns against England. The shrewd, determined young monarch sets up the country’s first secret service, to give her early warning of assassination plots, rebellions and invasion plans. Ned finds himself on the opposite side from the girl he longs to marry, Margery Fitzgerald.

Over a turbulent half-century, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed, as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. Elizabeth clings precariously to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents.

About the Author:

Ken Follett’s first Kingsbridge novel, the masterful epic The Pillars of the Earth, enchanted millions of readers with its compelling drama of war, passion and family conflict set around the building of a cathedral. The sequel, World Without End, was a number one bestseller in the UK, US and Europe, taking readers back to medieval Kingsbridge two centuries later, as the men, women and children of the city once again grappled with the devastating sweep of historical change.

Ken Follett was twenty-seven when he wrote Eye of the Needle, an award-winning thriller that became an international bestseller. Recently, he has written the bestselling Century trilogy, which comprises of Fall of Giants, Winter of the World and Edge of Eternity.

Ken Follett’s 30 novels have sold over 160 million copies to date, published in 30 languages, and the latest novel Edge of Eternity (published in September 2014) went to No. 1 in the UK hardback chart.

A Passion she could not deny—A lie she could never escape—

From the depths of a London slum, Amanda Granger created an illusion of wealth and breeding that became her passport into New York society. With her dazzling beauty and the ease with which she lived her lie, Amanda captivated an adoring public and drove men to bold and dangerous passions.

But for all her fierce ambition, all her daring dreams, Amanda Granger knew that her heart’s desires were held together by the fragile threads of deception and secrets. Triumph would always be elusive until she escaped from her web of deceit.

Excerpt:

“I’ve come for Eloise’s hair ribbons.”

“I have them here,” Mrs. Bird said, withdrawing six palest pink satin ribbons from a wooden box.

Amanda inspected them and wrinkled her nose. “Much too pale for Eloise. She needs more color near her face. Let me see the ice blue ones.”

“Amanda, I don’t think it wise to make decisions without your employer’s permission.”

“Tonight is the Queen’s birthday ball. There will be two hundred and fifty debutantes coming out this year. Eloise must look her best. This blue will make her eyes more lively.”

Mrs. Bird burst into laughter. “Nothing could put spark into that girl’s eyes!” Then, suddenly remembering the Kents’ position and their very good patronage of her store when they could easily choose to go elsewhere, Mrs. Bird said protectively: “I think you should get the pink. That’s what she ordered.’

“No, the blue is better. And let me see those matching lace gloves.”

“Amanda! Lady Kent did not authorize you to buy gloves.”

“They will complete the outfit. Eloise will look wonderful. Wrap them up.”

“I don’t like this.”

Amanda signed the bill and then took the receipt and box that Mrs. Bird had tied with string. “It’ll be all right. You’ll see.” Arnanda smiled with assurance, but it wasn’t until she was out on the sidewalk again that she felt her heart resume beating.

She was taking a great risk at further upsetting Lady Kent. But Amanda was counting on the customary weekend bustle in Kent Manor to deflect any confrontations.

By the time Amanda reached Regent Street, the sun was completely up. She whisked through the lacy wrought-iron gate, ran through the precisely manicured gardens to the back of the imposing four-story brick house to the back door that led four steps down to the kitchens, butler’s pantry and servants quarters.

“You’re fifteen minutes late!” Georgia, the red-haired, obese cook snarled as she hastily slammed a ladleful of porridge into a china bowl and put it on a wicker tray.

Book Review: Rau:The Great Love Story of Bajirao Mastani

Original Title: Raau: (Original Book on Bajirao-Mastani) (Marathi)
Title : Raau: The Greatest Love Story of Bajirao Mastani.
ISBN : 9382616802
ISBN 13: 9789382616801
No. of Pages: 352
Price: 399 INR

Synopsis:

'My eyes, they rain all the time
My eyes, they rain all the time
Till I see him in mine'

When Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa, feared by even the mighty Mughals, hears the exquisite Mastani sing, the passion that sparks between them grows quickly into a raging fire.
The Peshwa defies his orthodox Brahmin heritage, declaring his love openly for the half-Muslim dancer, in the face of fierce opposition. A man way ahead of his time, Bajirao causes outrage when he marries Mastani, bringing her into his home as his second wife.

Review:

The Book as the title suggest is the eternal love story of one of the greatest Maratha Warrior, Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa and Mastani.  This book is Translation of one of the greatest novels in Marathi language. The Book Throws light on some of the greatest battles fought by Maratha Empire under Peshwa Bajirao. Peshwa Bajirao was a fearless leader and the one who loved his empire, who lead the empire to victories in numerous battles (41 to be more precise). He is one of three Generals in the History who has never lost a battle in his life.

The Book is an amazing experience to the reader to experience the very beautiful Shanivar Wada, as the book “shows” you what it was rather than telling you how it was to live and be in 17th Century. The book is more about the relationship that was between Bajirao & Mastani, a courtesan in Bajirao’s Darbar. The book progress and one gets to know how Bajirao fell in love with Mastani, a mere singer and dancer. This was a very common thing back in those days,a minister of an empire having a mistress even when he was married. But one gets to know the bond they share and Mastani was more than just a Mistress to Bajirao. They formed this instant liking for each other where they didn’t know what the consequences of the relationship and not caring about what the world would say or judge them. Whole of Pune and his entire empire was against Bajirao for keeping a non Hindu mistress and trating her equally as he would treat his wife. On the course Bajirao faces more consequences as his mother, brother and his beloved Kashi( Kashibai, wife of Peshwa Bajirao), all close the door on his face without understanding his side.
This book clearly depicts the story of two lovers, who face the hatred of whole world to be together. This book is not just a love story, but a story of the courageous warrior that Peshwa Bajirao was, the loving Father and over caring Elder Brother and a dutiful Husband and Proud Son that he was.

You should definitely read the book if you love reading Historic Fiction or even Romance in general. Also I would suggest you to watch the Movie just to get more of the Visuals of the Places and mind you the movie is very different from the original book so beware and don’t be fooled by the typical Bollywood Masala that the movie is.

Always You Excerpts

Excerpt:

She leaned against the counter and began filling them out. “How much do I owe you?” She asked.

“Dinner,” he replied.

She looked up at him with a raised brow. “Excuse me?”

“You owe me the dinner you promised me ten years ago, with interest I’d say you owe me somewhere around one hundred dinners.” He put his elbows on the counter between them and leaned towards her, bringing their faces close together. “I’m free Friday if you want to start chipping away at that debt.” He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

She stood up straight and pushed the completed forms toward him. “That should do it.” She gathered up her purse and keys she had set on the counter. “I’ll thank you now for the puppy because at two in the morning when it has me up with its whining and howling, I will be anything but thankful. In fact, I will probably be cursing you.”

She smiled, but it didn’t quite have the same flash as before, and he felt a web of disappointment she hadn’t responded the way he wanted her to. But he wasn’t planning on giving up that easily. “You’re welcome. And if you need any help at two in the morning or just want the satisfaction of knowing I’m not getting any sleep either, call me.”

“I just might do that. See you around, Zack.”

“Sure thing,” he said as she walked through the door.

She stopped, turned around, and leaned against the door jam. A smile touched the corners of her lips. “Dinner’s at seven. Don’t be late.”
