Book Blitz: Reign & Revolution

Reign & Revolution

(Hive Queen Saga, #3)
Publication date: April 12th 2016
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult
The Hive Queen Saga’s Thrilling Conclusion!
Rhiannon and her Hive have mastered space travel. Sort of. At least, they’re better at it. They’ve outsmarted kidnappers, survived severe oxygen deprivation, and heisted back their own ship engine from would-be thieves.
Since joining up, they’ve traveled further and further away from their home planet. But out on Yin He Garden Station (in Chinese-owned territory), home catches up at a physics symposium.
When Alan’s former research advisor makes an offer that’ll bring them home as respected members of society, Rhiannon knows she has to accept. But home isn’t exactly as she left it, and a hostile space fleet stands between her aging ship and her new/old life. Should she be running towards the fleet, or scurrying back into international space as fast as her craft can go?

EXCERPT:
If Rhiannon had known how much time she’d spend in her ship’s airlock, she might have decorated. As it was, the place was small and bare aside from the bright spacesuits of its current occupants. Grey metal covered the walls and the un-adorned floors. A spoked wheel—in the same grey metal—blended into the door that would open the ship to the outside.
The vestibule barely had enough space for her Hive to cram inside.
Would the wheel be hot or cold to the touch? Rhiannon would never know, only coming here when she was already kitted up. Hands slick in her spacesuit’s recycled air.
The staging room where she’d donned her red crackle-painted suit—I still wish I knew whether the paint was supposed to look like this—was barely better. Banks of grey metal lockers held full-body suits that might protect a wearer from the void.
For the moment, she left off her hood-like helmet. If someone asks, I’ll say it’s to save oxygen. Her nose would itch the second she couldn’t touch it, made worse by the sweat-scent of everyone who’d ever worn the red gear. Her fingers and toes were already clammy in their rubber casings. She’d spritzed the inside with perfume to combat the rankness, and she hoped to find herself ensconced in a cocoon that was still human-humid, yes, but also vital with amber notes, like a thick waft from a nightclub. This next outing would prove the idea’s worth.
All five of her Devoted readied themselves beside her. Gavin flexed his knees to check his black suit’s range of motion. Luciano had chosen the bright yellow rubber that made him look like a deformed chicken, not that she’d tell him that. Victor wore a grey suit that matched the rest of his clothes, and Alan poked at his pad with a blue-coated finger.
Mel, of course, had chosen to go au natural—aside from his regular vest—since his metal body held up well in vacuum. He wouldn’t have been able to fit all his limbs into a human-shaped spacesuit anyway.

Published by: Limitless Publishing
Publication date: March 22nd 2016
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult
Hadley Daniels’s life seems perfect…
Before the beginning of sophomore year of high school, Hadley and her family move to a beautiful beach town, where she makes amazing new friends and lands the boyfriend of her dreams-Nick Jenkins. He’s the kind of guy every girl swoons over, and it isn’t long until Hadley discovers some are still swooning.
A famous ex-girlfriend makes matters more complicated…
After some time dating, Hadley and Nick form a deep bond. But insecurity sets in when Hadley discovers her boyfriend once had a huge crush on her friend-who just happens to be the beautiful former teen TV star, Simone Hendrickson.
The past is the past-or so they say…
Hadley confronts Nick, who confesses about his history with Simone. Though he claims to only have eyes for Hadley now, it’s hard to believe-especially when she’s blindsided with the news that Nick and Simone kissed after school.
Now Hadley must determine who is telling the truth. Love, betrayal, friendship…who needs soap opera drama when you’re busy competing with a star?

EXCERPT:
Then the most beautiful sound in the world came along—the final bell. I grabbed my bag and rushed out the door to my locker, where I ran into Reagan O’Hara, Nick’s gorgeous ex-girlfriend. “Watch where you’re going, spaz,” she said, glaring at me. “Exactly where are you in such a hurry to get to anyway? I can’t imagine that you’d have plans.”
I could have said, “Off to meet my boyfriend, you know, the guy you used to badmouth me to,” but no, I took the high road and said, “Excuse me,” and kept going.
“Whatever, loser,” she said. My shoulders tensed. As I tried to ignore her and tell myself it was just jealousy, I couldn’t pretend that her words didn’t hurt. I had been considered kind of a loser at my old school in Goodacre. I had had one super close best friend who I did everything with, Lexi Irvin, and when she moved to Dallas, it was as if I had been abandoned. So yeah, I had felt like a complete loser in Goodacre, but now I was here in Grand Haven, with new friends and a new positive outlook on life. I had a new best friend, Charlotte Lidstrom, and had become friends with former teen TV star Simone Hendrickson and her best friend, Asia Milanowski.
It could be intimidating hanging out with Simone since she was popular, pretty, and famous. Sometimes I felt invisible next to her, and unfortunately, hanging with Simone sometimes meant spending time with people like Reagan or Simone’s other friends, Pilar Ito and Morgan Kemp. Morgan was the ultimate mean girl. I swear, even if she told me she loved my outfit and was hooked up to a lie detector test saying she was telling the truth, I still wouldn’t want to risk it and I’d go home and change. But today I was not going to worry about Morgan, Reagan, or any of that. I was just going to focus on my first date with Nick.
Until I rounded the corner and ran into Simone, who was waiting for me at my locker with Morgan and Pilar.
“Hey, Hadley,” Simone said. “Wanted to return your lucky bracelet. Let’s hope it helped me pass my math test.”
She handed me my heart and natural stone charm bracelet and I slid it on my wrist. Morgan looked down at my hands and made a face.
“Why are you wearing such dark nail polish?” she asked me.
My face got warm. “I thought the color was pretty when I saw it in the store. I’ve never seen this shade of purple with so much blue in it.”
“Guys aren’t into weird nail polish colors,” Morgan said as she fluffed her long curly blonde hair with her red polished fingers.
Great, so even my nail polish was wrong. Could I do anything right?
“Here comes Nick,” Pilar said, and the girls all got quiet.
“Hey, guys,” he said, coming up and nodding at them. I started to curl my fingers under so he wouldn’t notice my dark polish—the color that up until a few minutes ago I thought was unique and beautiful was now making me feel like a little oddball.
“Cool color,” Nick said.
“Huh?”
“I like the blue. It’s very you,” he said, and then he reached over and intertwined his fingers with mine. Take that, you dark nail polish haters.
“So are we all heading over to Scoops together?” he asked.
Simone played with a strand of her long blonde hair, but didn’t say a thing.
“Yup, we thought we’d go over with you guys,” Morgan said, smiling up at him with her gleaming white teeth.
Wait, what? No, not cool. This was our first date and I knew I’d feel awkward talking to him around a group—a group judging me on what I said, did, and apparently even the colors I wore.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
Dark Memories
By Linda Hope Lee

We hope you enjoyed reading the first chapter of Dark Memories and its reviews! If you missed any, go back and check them out...

Launch - Introduction to Dark Memories

When writing a new story, I often begin with a setting. Such was the case with Dark Memories. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and one year I took a trip to our country’s opposite corner, where I visited Vermont. I had never been there before but had heard how beautiful the countryside is, and it did not disappoint.

Bookworm Nation - Review

"This hooked me right from the start. . . . I liked Deborah and Milo and how they have to work together to solve the mystery and learn to forgive along the way. I thought the mystery was well done, I like trying to figure out who the bad guy is and being surprised in the end."

Deborah did not want to share Carla Cassidy’s fate. The young woman’s tragic death was the reason Deborah left Fairfield four years ago. Now she was back, intending to once again make the small town her home. The cruel note told her someone didn’t want her to return.

His deep voice rang with friendliness, and if Deborah’s instincts were on target, his gaze held more than a hint of male interest. Despite her annoyance with the car breakdown, she experienced a tingle of excitement.

Bookworm Lisa - Excerpt

Understanding glimmered in his dark eyes. “Okay, I get it. You’re afraid to go off with a stranger, right?

Don’t blame you. Can’t be too careful these days. But, let me introduce myself, and then we won’t be strangers anymore.

"The author definitely tries to give you a sense that everyone is guilty so you don't know who it really is but suspect everyone. There are a lot of people to suspect with possible motives. . . . This book was clean and I really appreciate that."

As Deborah listened to Milo talk about his farm and horses, she leaned back and relaxed against the cool leather. She even allowed herself to daydream a little. He seemed such a congenial person, not to say handsome and appealing. Perhaps they could forge a friendship. She doubted there was a Mrs. Jordan. If a wife existed, surely he would have mentioned her by now.

EskieMama Reads - Excerpt

The gesture meant he obviously expected more. But as far as Deborah was concerned, she had already revealed enough. Of course, if they continued their association, he would eventually learn more. But not now. Not when they’d just met. She set her mug and empty plate on the coffee table. “This has been really pleasant, but I should be going.”

I recently wrote a piece to announce the coming release of my third novel, The Carpenter’s Daughter. The post was called Enough, and in it I talk about how this story sank into me. Deep.

I’m still soaking in that. See, as a writer, I’ve put myself in a pretty vulnerable position. Telling stories, especially stories that are truly a work of the heart, is a little bit like walking down a busy street naked. For me, I write to learn, which means the things my characters go through are often reflective of my own life. Not in the details, (I’m not Sarah Sharpe. Anyone who has seen my lack of carpentry skills can vouch for that!), but in the emotional journey. Sharing that with the world, and knowing that there will be criticism… that’s pretty scary.

However, this journey, this book, has become a landmark in my heart. One worth sharing. It boils down so beautifully simple to this:

Jesus loves me.

Did I know that before? Yes. Since very early childhood.  But, somehow, through Sarah’s story, truth has moved deeper into my heart. As I have been reflecting on that, I am reminded of this devotion I wrote a couple years ago, and I wanted to share it. Not only because it is true—Jesus loves me with Joy—but because today, that truth means a little bit more to me.

I pray He keeps teaching me, sinking His love deeper, and maybe as He continues His good work in me, it may impact others too.

Nothing in this world could mean more

I am Loved: Loved With Joy

(originally posted on www.thefreeslavesdevotion.com
The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, he will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV

I wondered what that meant–“He will be quiet in His love”. Does it mean that because He loves me He will cease rebuking? No, I don’t think that’s right. The proverbs tell us that The Lord rebukes the son that He loves. I needed to do some digging.
I’m so glad I did.
It’s interesting to note that the Hebrew word used here was commonly used to denote the love between a man and a woman. Love like what we think of in human terms. Love that is deeply felt and pursued by choice.
Have you ever been told that you’re difficult to love? Ouch. I mean, really, ouch. That sting doesn’t quit.
Maybe sometimes we read of God’s agape—his unique, divine love–and we think in the secret, wounded places of our hearts “I like that, but He loves me because He must. . . Because He is love.” Something in that robs a bit of the sheen from that truth.
Listen, oh my tender heart, to what Matthew Henry writes of this verse:
“I know not where there is the like expression of Christ’s love to his church. . . The great God not only loves his saints, but he loves to love them, is pleased that he has pitched upon these objects of his love.”
This is the kind of love a bridegroom lavishes upon his bride as he stares into her eyes with wonder and joy and LOVE.
And my God looks at me like that? My heart just melted. He loves me with a joyful love!

Author Interview : Hariharan Iyer (Book : Surpanakha)

About the Book:

Educated, young, no-nonsense bearing, able administrator—these are the qualities that won Sesha the loyalties of the people after three years of rule as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. An allegation that he was the mastermind behind the murder of 73 Kannadigas threatens to bring him down but he is miraculously saved in the 11th hour.

Even before he can relish his victory, Sesha is slapped with the charge of sexually offending a young nurse. This time round, the case is strong and his supporters are uncertain. Worse, his teenage daughter calls him 'vile' and walks out of the house. While Mythili, his wife promises her full support, her secretive activities—undertaken with the help of a retired cop—is a cause of concern for Sesha.

Will Zarina, the human-rights activist, succeed in bringing him down? What about the insinuations of a celebrity lawyer that he is casteist and antiminorities? When the young nurse is found dead, the case becomes even more complex. Who is innocent? Who is guilty? And who is the mastermind?

Excerpt:

Zarina sensed the opportunity and asked, “Do you mind if we help you?”

“How?” asked Ramanujam.

“I would like to buy an apartment and I can pay upfront.”

There was a momentary silence. It appeared Ramanujam had not expected

this.

Perhaps a win-win situation for both, she thought. “Do I take it that you’re
fine with selling the apartment to me?”

“Hmm…I’m afraid not.”

“What?”

“I’ve committed the remaining apartments to my friends.”

“If I may ask you…have you entered into an agreement with them?”

“No, but I would not like to go back on my commitment. They’re my
friends.”

“What is the price you’ve agreed with them? We can pay a higher price.”

“We haven’t yet agreed on a price.”

“Then what is your expectation? Let us see if we can beat that.”
Ramanujam shook his head.

“Can I talk to your friends and see if anyone is willing to…” She clammed
up, as Ramanujam’s facial expression was not encouraging. Frustrating. He
was blocking all her efforts to find a solution. She decided to voice her
concern. “There’s no agreement. You haven’t agreed on the price. They’re not
ready with the funds. And you still want to sell the apartments to them?”

He was taken aback by her raised voice. “See Ms Zarina, it’s my house. I
can sell it to anyone I want. It’s not your business to suggest how and to
whom I should sell.”

There was absolute silence, as Zarina and her parents did not know how to
respond.

He must have realised that his response was too harsh and he tried to
control the damage.

“They’re all my friends. We can always agree on these things later. What’s
important is that it’s going to be a small community of family and close
friends. We don’t want outsiders.”

Then it struck her. Shit! It was all there before her eyes: The vadakalai
thiruman on his forehead, his wife drawing the curtain to stop them viewing
his lunch, the ‘Vishnu only’ photo frames that lined the wall, his reference to
them as ‘outsiders’. Why did it not strike her earlier? Now she understood

Ramanujam’s hesitation to sell the apartment to them: Orthodoxy.
Conservatism. Religious fundamentalism. He did not want to sell because
they were Muslims. Still, she wanted to confirm. “Who are these friends to
whom you want to sell the apartments?”

Ramanujam did not understand the relevance of the question. Still he
answered, “They were my colleagues in Southern Railway.”

“Iyengars?”

“Hmm…yes.”

She smirked. “I expected this. So, you don’t want to sell to us because we
are Muslims.”

Ramanujam remained silent.

His silence confirmed her suspicion. She closed her eyes to suppress tears.

Rejection based on her religion. She was facing it for the second time in six
months. Earlier, someone had rejected her love for the same reason. Now, this
old man was refusing to sell one of his apartments to her. Earning money and
earning respect were two different things, it appeared. Being a member of a
minority community was, after all, not easy.

She got up from the sofa, signalling the end of the discussions.

Author Interview:

Snehal: Hello Mr. Hariharan, Thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little . about yourself and your background.
Hariharan: I am finance professional by default and a writer by choice. I head the finance function of a $150 mill group based in East and Central Africa. My wife and I live in Dar-es-Salaam while my sons pursue their ambitions in India. Filter coffee, Carnatic music, Arun Shourie’sbooks, spicy Indian food and smart casuals define a part of my personality. My inner personality? I am still exploring.

Snehal: Tell us more about what you’ve written in the past.

Hariharan: Not content with just a rewarding corporate job, I took to writing a couple of years ago. I blogged on media and current affairs for a year at valadyviews.blogspot.com and contributed articles to The Hoot, an online media watch portal before hitting on the idea for this novel.

Snehal: Give us an insight of your main character and how you thought about it.

Hariharan: The lead character is an amazing woman called Mythili. A loving wife.Affectionate yet a disciplinarian mom.Wife of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mythili is an amazing mix of childish enthusiasm and sober maturity. Sounds like a paradox? Hear this. When the High Court acquits her husband Sesha in a hate crime case, she pulls him out of a lecture in Anna University, gives the security guys the slip and takes him out on a late-night romantic drive. But when a charge of sexual harassment surfaces against Sesha, when her daughter calls Sesha vile and walks out of the house, what does she do? Does it shake her unassailable faith in her husband? It is her response to this challenge that sets her apart from the heroines of contemporary novels.

Snehal: How much was your research during the writing process of the book?

Hariharan: The novel revolves around political controversies and human rights violations. So, I spent a good amount of time researching the legal and constitutional provisions, how media houses run the show in the wake of dwindling ad revenues…

Snehal: What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Hariharan: I would rather talk about the difficult phase I went through while writing the book. My first draft was 105,000 words. I gave the manuscript to a couple of beta readers and their near unanimous response was ‘The book is interesting, but cut down the size.’ And that was an unenviable job. Every word I had written appeared to be significant. Every word I deleted cried for its continuance. And indecisive period of 10 days. Finally I cut down around 15,000 words!
Snehal: How did you come up with that title?
Hariharan: You know what? The initial title was Human Rights Industry. A beta reader said it sounded more like the caption of a thesis. The example she gave struck me. Then I considered 7-8 options and finally chose Surpanakha. Even now the question I face is why title the novel after a negative character.
Snehal: What made you choose this particular theme for your book?
Hariharan: A couple of years ago, a law intern alleged that a retired judged behaved in a sexually inappropriate manner with her. Celebrity lawyers took up her case. Media hounded the judge. He was forced to resign from a strategic post retirement job. Thereafter when the police registered a case and wanted the victim to testify, she vanished. We don’t know what happened. Was there pressure on her not to testify? Or was it decided that the purpose had been achieved? Neither the celebrity lawyers nor media felt obliged to explain their position to the masses.
Secondly, a series of articles by an IIM professor on the mushrooming NGOs and their questionable sources of funds forced me to think. Around the same time there were reports that well-known personalities who were running foreign funded NGOs were using the funds for buying branded jewelry, clothing and shoes! It made me wonder what the underlying motivation could be for floating such NGOs.

Both the above gave rise to a lot of what ifs in me and pushed me into the realm of fiction. And the novel was born. I would, however, like to clarify that it is not a real life story.

Snehal: Did you ever get a writer’s block?

Hariharan: Yes, writing the denouement was difficult. Writing an action packed end would have been easier, but the story didn’t require one. A denouement should have drama and believable surprises. Arguments should be intelligent as to not just cover all the loose ends but also make the reader feel why he could not deduce what the main character was concluding. The initial 3-4 drafts did not bring out the drama I wanted. I went blank for a week.

Snehal: Do you remember the first story you read that had an impact on your life?
Hariharan: Panchatantra stories were one of the earliest books I read. They continue to be my favorites even today. They influence the way I see life and condition my responses to unexpected developments.

Snehal: Which writers inspire you?

Hariharan: Arun Shouries, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Rajiv  Malhotra and S L Byrappa to name a few.
Snehal: Is there a message in your novel that you want your readers to grasp?

Hariharan: Surpanakha is a thriller, which keeps the reader hooked to the story till the last page. Apart from that, I don’t think there is any message in the novel.

Snehal:  How can readers discover more about you?
Hariharan: They can connect with me through my Facebook page. My Twitter handle is @HariharanIyer. Readers can visit my blog Valady Views.
Snehal: Anything you want to add that I missed?

Hariharan: This is a fairly comprehensive interview. If at all I have to add something, it is about the publishing process a new author goes through. But that is a vast subject…could be the subject of a book. Thanks Ms.Snehal for this opportunity.

Snehal: Your Welcome and Good luck with the book launch.

The Trio. That’s who we’ve been since birth: Nate, Leo . . . and me, Quinn, the token girl. Our mothers met in a prenatal class and became best friends, which meant that the three of us hit every milestone together, from the first day of school to the very first kiss. And beyond.
I’ve always been caught in the middle between the two boys. I’ve been in love with Leo since I was eight, even though he doesn’t see me as anything but his pal. And I know that Nate’s hung up on me. I see the look in his eyes. I wish I could say I felt the same, but I don’t. It’s getting harder and harder to keep him in the friend zone, though.
Things between the three of us aren’t easy anymore. Leo’s popular, the football team’s star receiver, and the object of every girl’s fantasy. I know he doesn’t mean to leave us behind, but now Nate and I are just people he used to know.
What used to be so simple is suddenly messy and complicated. Leo is all I’ve ever wanted, but even if I had the chance to be with him, how would Nate would handle it?
When that chance does come along . . . in the most unexpected way . . . I’m helpless to resist Leo. What was always meant to be is finally happening . . . but will it come at the risk of losing both my friends?

***This is Book #1 of a trilogy, and it does include an unresolved ending. ***

EXCERPT:

Leo dropped his arm to the ground on the side of the chair away from me and brought it back up holding a bottle. He lifted it to his lips and took a long swig. I thought it was beer. I hoped it was beer, and not something stronger.
He caught me watching him, and one side of his mouth quirked up. “Want some, Mia? You know I don’t have cooties.”
I was glad the dark hid my flushed face. “No, thanks.”
“Ah, yeah. That’s right. I forgot you’re too good to drink with us, huh?” He tipped the bottle back again and then held it out to Sarah, who took a pull without hesitation. “So why’d you bother coming tonight if you’re not really going to enjoy yourself?”
“I . . . I thought it would be fun. And Jake wanted to come.” I shifted in my seat. “I can have a good time without getting drunk. Or high. Or . . .” I looked up at the deck, where the grope-fest continued. “Um, without doing . . . things.”
Leo smirked. “Cool. Good for you. But if you’re going to sit around and judge everyone who does want to do . . . things, maybe you should just go the fuck home.”
“Hey.” Jake’s tone wasn’t aggressive, just chiding. “Chill, Taylor.”
A tic jumped in Leo’s cheek, and his eyes narrowed. “What’s the matter, Donavan? You want to be her big bodyguard? Her boyfriend? Believe me, dude. I’m the last guy you need to protect her from.” His gaze slid back to me. “Or am I?” He took another drink, and it occurred to me that he’d probably had quite a few.
My stomach clenched at Leo’s random aggression. This was the first time we’d been together or spoken since I’d left him in the alley outside the diner. Clearly neither of us had forgotten that. The tension in the air fairly crackled, and I wasn’t sure who was going to break the awkward silence.
“Why do you call her Mia?” It was Sarah who spoke. She only sounded curious, not at all defensive or suspicious. I was pathetically grateful to her for shifting the focus as I held my breath, waiting to see if Leo would answer. “Is it Spanish?”
I saw his throat bob as he swallowed before he spoke. “No. Her name—her real name—is Amelia Quinn. After her great-grandmother. When we were little, sometimes her mom would call her that—Amelia Quinn. I wanted to say it, too, but I couldn’t pronounce Amelia. So I called her Mia. Mia Quinn.”
His voice was husky and sent a thrill down my spine. When I glanced up, his eyes were on my face again, boring into me until I couldn’t breathe. I shivered and then without thinking about it, I licked my lips.
Instantly Leo’s stare was fastened on my mouth. His own lips parted, and his chest seemed to rise and fall a little faster. I was dizzy with wanting him, and at the same time, I felt like an idiot. Here I was with another guy—while he was sitting with another girl. And yet the pull between us was undeniable. I was dying to crawl over to him, slither up his body, press my boobs into his chest and kiss him until we forgot our own names. I’d never known want that way—real, tangible need—and I fought back tears, because Leo had made it abundantly clear that he didn’t want me the same way.
