Book Review: Beyond the Rising Tide

Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult
Publisher: Sweetwater Books, an imprint of Cedar Fort
Publication date: June 14, 2016
Number of pages: 229

Kai met Avery only once--in the moment he died saving her life. Now when he's not using his new healing powers to help people, he watches helplessly as Avery's life is unraveled by his death. To help her, he risks everything by breaking the rules, dangerously blurring the barriers between life and death.

The book starts off with an accident, where Kai who basically is a healer (a dead guy though) helps the boy live by healing his heart and then there’s Grim, the guy who seals the death of a person. Then there’s Avery Ambrose, the girl who is grieving over the death of the Kai as she was one who witnessed his death, she was the last person to be with Kai during his last moments. Tyler, Avery’s boyfriend has broken up with her a she has becoming “Boring” his exact words and no more the fun person to be with. How can one be a fun person, if you are the sole reason for someone’s death? While Avery cries over Kai’s death, he watches her silently as there’s nothing he can do to help her.
In his Afterlife Kai is in Demoror (Something like heaven). He meets Charles, to seek some advice when he see’s Charles wearing a ring that takes him to the mortal world, Kai in a zest of the moment steals the ring and comes to earth to help Avery, to help her overcome the angst that she is suffering due to his death. They meet when she’s trying to save a crab from fishing net as instructed by her mother, who is suffering from depression. There’s an instant bond between them and thus starts his mission to make the cheerful person she was and get Tyler back with her. Only for Avery to realize that Tyler is not really the one for her. Further story unfolds when both Kai and Avery realizes that they love each other, when Kia tries to take away the guilt of his death from her. She realizes she couldn’t be happy again without Kai not being around her.
Soon it’s time for Kai to return where he came from and thus starts the emotional journey Avery has to go through and she goes into depression and doubts if everything in the past few days. Did Kai actually vanish in front of her? While reading the book one goes with a sea of emotions throughout: love, loss guilt, pure happiness. Everything at once, which maybe sounds awkward but is actually not at all awkward there are very times that all emotions get justified so beautiful in a book and this book is one of those. The time when Kai tells her that she has to live the life that someone gave to her and not waste it being depressed. The time when Avery realizes that Kai was the one who saved her that day. The time when Kai finds his mother in the afterlife. Everything is so beautifully described brilliantly. The scenic beauty of the surrounding that Avery lives is are so wonderful and the description felt like I was into the world that Kai and Avery lived in.
The book is a very fresh and unique teenage love story. The writer, Sara Beard has done a wonderful job writing this mind blowing book. A very different YA book.

Audiobook Release Blitz: Sheltered in His Arms By Tara Taylor Quinn

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Welcome to the Audiobook Release Blitz for
Sheltered in His Arms
By Tara Taylor Quinn

About the Audiobook Release

I’m an avid reader. And with my 75th book publishing in a few days, I’m an avid writer, too. And yet there was one aspect of storytelling to which I was completely ignorant. Absent. I didn’t get it. The world of audiobooks.

And then, a few years ago, I was given a free audiobook from one of my favorite authors. I put it on iPod more to be polite than anything else. The book was a gift, I’d listen out of respect. Then, I figured, I’d go buy the book and read it so that I could get my full enjoyment out of the story.

That didn’t happen. Instead, as happens so many times in my life, my ignorance turned to understanding. And an entire new world opened up to me. I’d planned to listen to a few words on my daily commute and then switch to the music that always saw me safely down the road. Imagine my conundrum when, for that whole week, all I wanted to do was commute! I couldn’t wait to get in the car and get back to my friends.

And now, this week, I have the honor of bringing you one of my own books in audio format! Sheltered In His Arms is a unique story. It’s about a man who made a huge mistake. It’s about the people he loves. The people who once loved him. And it’s about healing. I hope you’ll give it a listen! I personally chose the narrator based on audition recordings and she does a great job. I promise friends to sit in the car with you as you get to where you need to be!

Book Review : Animal Farm

Book: Animal Farm: A Fair Story
Author: George Orwell
ISBN: 045228244
No. of Pages: 102
Copy : Owned
Price :125 INR

About the Book:

Tired of their servitude to man, a group of farm animals revolt and establish their own society, only to be betrayed into worse servitude by their leaders, the pigs, whose slogan becomes: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." This 1945 satire addresses the socialist/communist philosophy of Stalin in the Soviet Union.

Review:

Animal farm is the story of animals in Manor Farm who are tired of being the slaves of the man and the ill-treatment given by their owners. When the animals free themselves of the slavery there’s only one rule in Manor farm: All animals are equal. But as the story progresses one gets to know that some animals are more equal than others. This book is basically his take on the Russian Revolution, where in the name of animals being ruled in Manor Farm. He best describes how people fight for freedom but surrender as soon as there is a anarchy, the thought of being free vaporizes into thin air and survival is the number one policy for them. Another aspect Orwell highlights is the illiteracy and head hunt throughout the book best describing how the Soviet dictatorship took rise all of a sudden.
Other than this the book not only focuses on the Russian Revolt but explains that in every revolt the situation is same. It explains how creating uprisings won’t help and things would never change. The environment would be anything but constant.
The writing style is simple and the book is an easy read can be finished in a single go. The book is a brilliant take on the political background and political reform and starts striking your chords on the current political situations. The book just gets you into thinking about reforms you would want and how you shouldn’t screw up the way the other “less equal animals” did.

Book Review : A Painted House by John Grisham

Book: A Painted House
Author: John Grisham
ISBN:0385337930
No. of Pages:384
Copy:Owned
Price:501 INR

About the book:

Until that September of 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long, hot summer of his seventh year, two groups of migrant workers — and two very dangerous men — came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries are flooding Luke’s world.

A brutal murder leaves the town seething in gossip and suspicion. A beautiful young woman ignites forbidden passions. A fatherless baby is born ... and someone has begun furtively painting the bare clapboards of the Chandler farmhouse, slowly, painstakingly, bathing the run-down structure in gleaming white. And as young Luke watches the world around him, he unravels secrets that could shatter lives — and change his family and his town forever....

Review:

A painted house is the coming of age book about a seven year old boy, Luke Chandler. Set in the year 1952 and the author’s home town northeastern Arkansas, the book is set over a period of two months, the harvest season that is. The Chandler family hires a family of hill people ‘the Spruill’s’ and some Mexican migrants to help them in harvesting their cotton crop. The Mexicans stay in the chandler’s barn while the Spruill’s house a camp in front of the unpainted Chandler house. Luke, other than working for long hours in the cotton field to collect money and buy a Cardinal jacket, he enjoys the baseball games and loves going to town every weekend.
On one town visit Luke notices Hank Spruill, who is aggressive and somewhat mentally unstable attacking one of the three Sisco boys’s who have a regular street fight, the boy succumbs to his injuries and a investigation follows. Luke gets involved in the investigation as he had noticed the fight and his fairly simple a dreamy life flips the side. Over the following days Luke enjoys his time with tally Spruill, observing her and cowboy, going on long walks with her and seeing her naked while she bathes far away from the field in the stream of water. Everything is new for seven year old Luke.
Over the period of two months Luke is threatened, traumatized to have seen things that no seven year old would want to. He wakes to nightmares of the events he witnessed. The unconditional help that his mother offers to their very poor neighbors, the Latchers. The unfolding of certain events that change his life forever. One day Luke discovers someone has been secretly painting the weather-beaten clapboards white, and eventually he continues the job with the approval of his parents and the assistance of the Mexicans, contributing some of his own savings for the purchase of paint.
The things Luke experiences and his struggle to keep up all the secrets and how he wishes that things would turn good is beautifully described. His strength and determination that they'll somehow have a good future is heartwarming.
This was my first John Grisham book and it sure isn’t my last ;)
It’s one hell of an engrossing book.

Book Tour Launch for

Through the Storm
By Rula Sinara

Tessa and Mac come together for protection, but might also find love. We hope you enjoyed a glimpse into their story through the reviews and excerpts from the tour. If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out...

Launch - The From Kenya, With Love Series

From the moment I began writing the first book in this series, The Promise of Rain, I knew that I’d be returning to Kenya’s Serengeti. There’s a magnificence and warmth about the Serengeti…an overwhelming, awe-inspiring power…a raw beauty. But it wasn’t only the setting that drew me in and brought back memories of the years I spent as a child in Africa, it was the characters who I grew to love and understand. It all came from the heart. Every word.

Brooke Blogs - Excerpt

Without him, Tessa Henning wasn’t worth the dust left by a mercilessly harvested and exquisitely carved elephant’s tusk, but once he discovered she knew too much, Brice would hunt her down just the same. He’d come after her because she was a traitor. He’d find her because she was his wife and he believed in gratitude and loyalty. He expected it.

underneath the covers - Excerpt

Mac stood on the front porch, leaning against the wooden log that supported the thatched overhang, watching her, the piercing blue of his eyes intense and knowing. Maybe it was the way the Kenyan sun had left its warmth on his skin or how stubble shadowed the hard lines of his jaw, but the way he looked at her sparked a smoldering ache in her chest. She swallowed hard to extinguish it. If only Mac hadn’t wanted to get away from home so badly. Maybe they would have eventually become friends. But he’d wanted to escape and explore and she’d wanted—needed—stability.

Becky on Books - Review

"I enjoyed reading Through the Storm–and now Kenya is added to my “places I want to go before I die” list. It sounds absolutely beautiful, if a bit intimidating…not quite the camping I’m used to ;) . . . Overall this was a lovely read. Through the Storm is a heartwarming story about family, trust, and finding the life you were meant to live."

Rockin' Book Reviews - Review

"There was never a moment the story dragged. There was constant developments that let to a profound climax. This was a clean, well-written book of mystery/suspense/romance/and new beginnings. The scenes were described in vivid detail and easily visualized. The characters appeared to be real. . . . This novel earned a Five Stars rating."

deal sharing aunt - Review

"This book is exactly why Harlequin has their heartwarming line. When a book can make me feel this many emotions for the main characters (especially when they are still married and I wanted to dislike them) and make me root for them, then I know that the author has somehow made them feel like family."

Wishful Endings - Review

"THROUGH THE STORM was surprisingly suspenseful while also maintaining the usualsweet romance that readers can count on when reading a Harlequin Heartwarming novel. Add to that the strong feel of friendship and family, a focus on the simple things in lifeand on the terrible cruelty of the illegal ivory trade, and this story had added depth and emotion that immerses the reader. A story well worth the read!"

EskieMama Reads - Review

"Through the Storm was very touching heartwarming clean romance. This book had a little of everything I like in a book romance, some laughs, a few tears, family & little mystery. . . . a pleasure to read."

Lampshade Reader - Excerpt

Nick was already sleeping in the tent he was sharing with Mac, and Mugi and Kesi had gone to bed. Tessa stared at the flames with her knees tucked against her chest and her chin resting on them. Her hair glistened in the firelight like the river’s surface on a full moon. He looked back into the fire. He had no business noticing those sorts of things. At least not in a way that stirred unwelcome feelings of nostalgia and longing. As a teen there’d been something about her that drew him in, but she’d always kept her guard up good and strong.

Christy's Cozy Corners - Review

"I love how developed the characters in this book are. They are not perfect and the love story is far from perfect. There is a lot of turmoil and complications, but in the end, Tessa finds out the truth and her heart is set free. You will love the descriptive writing and seeing how the plot develops. . . . I highly recommend this book!"

23 Review Street - Review

"Through The Storm is a heartwarming story about family, secrets and how to battle your way through the storm. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance that warms your heart and makes you see the good side of the storm."

Thoughts of a Blonde, Book talk - Review

"In this 3rd book in the From Kenya, With Love series, Rula Sinara brings us the story of a fractured family trying to unite for the good of their orphaned nephew, while investigating wrong doings and fighting attraction!"

Book talk - Excerpt

He’d always been comfortable being alone. He’d always felt at home out here in the Serengeti...but right now, hearing Tessa’s soft breathing and a bit of snoring from Nick, for the first time Mac felt like he was home. This was his family.

The Reading Diaries - Review

"I like the concept of going after Ivory traders it’s not something you see every day in a book and it’s a serious issue happening in Africa. I’m not a huge fan of love triangles but this isn’t bad it’s more a case of self-discovery and learning that the man she thought she loved isn’t the man she married. I enjoyed he author’s writing style the story just flows along smoothly a suspenseful mystery mixed with romance creating a captivating story. This is my first book by the author but after reading Through the Strom I know I need to check out her other books. Highly recommend for fans of suspenseful romance novels."

Book Review : Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Book: Eleanor & Park
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Language: English
No. Of Pages: 328
ISBN:1250012570
Copy type : Owned Book

About the Book:
Two misfits.
One extraordinary love.

Eleanor
... Red hair, wrong clothes. Standing behind him until he turns his head. Lying beside him until he wakes up. Making everyone else seem drabber and flatter and never good enough...Eleanor.

Park... He knows she'll love a song before he plays it for her. He laughs at her jokes before she ever gets to the punch line. There's a place on his chest, just below his throat, that makes her want to keep promises...Park.

Set over the course of one school year, this is the story of two star-crossed sixteen-year-olds—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.

Review:

“Did she miss him?
She wanted to lose herself in him. To tie his arms around her like a tourniquet.
If she showed him how much she needed him, he’d run away.”
                                                                                                            - Eleanor

The book is a story about two high school students Eleanor & Park who live in Omaha, Nebraska. Eleanor is a full figured girl with red curly hairs and park half –Korean boy. They meet each other first time on the school bus, initially not very fond of each other but later on connect well over the love for Comics and 80’s Music.
Gradually they getting to know each other they fall in love ignoring what others feel about them. They are young and madly in love. But Park thinks there’s something Eleanor’s holding back, as he finds the reasons he falls more and more in love with her. They have their own set of troubles in their love story like the popular girls in her class and her step dad Richie, who treats Eleanor like a trash. Their journey makes you want to fall in love again and reminds you of your first love.
It teaches you that love has no boundaries and the journey of Eleanor and Park from strangers to friends to lovers is heartwarming.
There are moments like the first glance and when the first hold each other’s hand which is described in such a cute manner. There’s everything in this book that reminds you to be young again and love someone with no boundaries. The book teaches you to enjoy every damn second of your time that you get to send with the one you love.
